Community & News

Going back to the Department's origins as a neighborhood volunteer fire department, the St. George Fire Department has always undertaken a number of community service programs that go beyond our charge to provide fire protection and medical assistance for the citizens of our District. Each of these programs contributes something to the community and helps promote public safety, public health, and/or public service.

We are YOUR fire department, and we are prepared to respond; to help you through unfortunate events in your life. But, we don't just want to be there when you need us in an emergency. We want to make a positive contribution to the quality of your daily life.

Some of our community service activities are extensions of our fire safety education programs. The Fire Safety House is a simulation of a home fire in which children are taught how to safely evacuate the home. It is designed primarily for children aged four to ten. In addition to school and day care center visits and station tours, we will dispatch an on-duty engine or ladder truck to a child's birthday party within the District. Each of these activities creates opportunities to educate children in fire safety in a fun and interesting way.

The St. George Fire Department is also engaged in philanthropic public service projects throughout the year. Our most well-known project is the annual Santa Parades in which we attempt to parade Santa Claus on a fire engine through every subdivision of the District. Our primary partners for this event are two great local charities, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank and Christmas for Challenged Children.

We partner with the East Baton Rouge Council on Aging in their annual Fans for the Elderly Program. Each of our fire stations service as a community donation point. We also take part in blood pressure screening and other events sponsored by BRCOA.
Our reach goes beyond emergency response as we strive to serve the Citizens of our District.
